The True Rebel Prayer

It can be a good thing to have a creed of some kind. Some mantra or words to calm you and help you find your centre. Like the Serenity Prayer at AA meetings, I need something like this. There are times when I get off-balance. I start to get overly cynical or jaded, angry and judgemental. Sometimes you feel like you are trying to put good out into the world and all you get back is a big F.U. I must admit that I am not perfect, and despite my philosophy to respond in a loving way, at moments I just want to scream F.U.

To This Day Project

This video by Shane Koyczan is not new but I just saw it for the first time due to a Facebook link. Give it a watch.

Not My Proudest Moment

In some ways it was just an ordinary high school day, but the moment is still clear in my mind. I don’t think it was the event itself or it’s details that make it linger with me to this day, but rather the conflict that was going on inside. Simultaneously I was feeling both regret and satisfaction. I felt sorry for him, but at the same time, I was glad to be one of his tormentors.

Bright Idea!

True Rebel Challenge at TEDx Mississauga

Is Anybody Out There?

Yesterday I had the great privilege to speak at a TEDx event in Mississauga. If you have never heard of TED they are committed to Ideas Worth Spreading and provide videos of people speaking on an insane amount of different topics.

Here in Mississauga our theme for the day was REBEL which provided a perfect opportunity to deliver the True Rebel Challenge to the 400 (or so) youth in attendance; Love, Dignity and Respect for every person.

White People Suck!

Catchy title I know! Being of European descent myself, it might sound strange, but these were the exact words that came to my head after a brief online interaction that I just had.

My Dad was born in Holland, as were my 4 grandparents, 8 great-grandparents and so on... In Holland Santa Claus is called Sinterklaas and comes door to door on the evening of December 5th with gifts. Sinterklaas does not come alone. He is preceded by a servant named Zwarte Piet, which translated is “Black Peter”.

Friendship Changes You

I stumbled across this piece of art today that was put together inspired by Mumford and Sons song, After the Storm.

Whenever we get an opportunity to see as brave and living and human, those who are regularly dehumanized, let's take it!

Something Different is Possible

Recently I was speaking at a Gr. 9 retreat, an event geared towards giving them an enthusiastic and positive start to their high school experience. I did the 20 dollar bill exercise with them (which you can find here) and commented, “We, as a society, have done a better job of recognizing the value of money than we have at recognizing the value of the people around us.” Much to my surprise one young man in the group reacted immediately with a loud, “So?!” that could be heard throughout the room.

Martin Luther King Jr. - A TRUE REBEL

It all started with Rosa Parks.  When Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to move to the back of the bus (the black section), there was no turning back.  Rosa was arrested on December 1, 1955 and 4 days later Martin was elected the head of a new protest group.  King helped to organize a bus boycott which would ask all black citizens to not use the bus system in Montgomery, Alabama until they were desegregated, no longer having a white section and a black section.  “Our concern” says Martin’s autobiography “would not be to put the bus company out
